ROBERT KNOKE

Robert Knoke
Paint It Black: Robert Knoke's Portraits of the Hipster Avant-Garde
German artist Robert Knoke may be known to the contemporary art world as a traditional portraitist, but unlike his forbears he's not interested in prettifying stuffed shirts. Instead, Knoke trains his ballpoint pen and markers on an unruly universe of hipsters, avant-garde artists, and visionaries, including Patti Smith and Marc Jacobs, rendering them in stark, expressive images.

BERLINDE DE BRUYCKERE

Berlinde de Bruyckere

“Berlinde de Bruyckere was born in 1964 in the Belgian city of Gent, where she lives and works
today.
In her sculptural work she uses wax, wood, wool, leather and horsehair, modelling intense gures
that suggest deformed human and animal forms.
Her sculptures can be seen as images of an archetypal pain, as re ections on themes that have
always concerned human beings: su ering, solitude, death, recollection.”

Elsien Gringhuis

F/W ‘10/’11

"After successfully graduating in 2008 at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem, Elsien Gringuis presented her rst
independent collection during Amsterdam International Fashion Week in July 2009.
She won several international prizes and awards including the Createurope award for ‘Best Avantgarde
Designer’ in Berlin.
Elsien Gringhuis style is known for the choice of smart simplicity while a complex and innovative construction
lies behind the simple eying silhouette.
She is inspired by shape and construction where use of material holds a great share to support the created
silhouette.
Other sources of inspiration are the contrast of human power and vulnerability and how we dominate the
world with technique. This perspective is re ected in the sharp angular, industrial and futuristic looks.
She uses sustainable and high quality fabrics like bamboo, wool, pressed silks, leather and hand coated fabrics.
Quote:
“A functional and well thought out design makes me very happy. All good things are simple, but there is
nothing more di cult than to make a good and simple design.”elsien gringhuis
